Why Trimming Your “Following” List Helps You Attract More Followers?
Even if it sounds counterintuitive, you can get more Instagram followers by unfollowing on Instagram those you no longer interact with. By interaction, we do not mean having conversations over Instagram comments or DMs. If a person is simply engaging with your posts with likes and comments, they are interacting with you. For most of us, this is nothing surprising. There are many people in our following on Instagram who never interact with us or our content. If we go by the general notion, we will keep these people in our follower lists for the sake of the number. Today we will tell you why that is not a good idea and what you should do instead.
Engagement vs. numbers
When we measure social media success, we often tend to go by concrete numbers. X has 100,000 Instagram likes, Y has 200,000 Instagram views, and so on. Given the way social media economics works, it makes a lot of sense to look at progress and growth from this perspective. However, things are slowly changing, and both brands and individual creators are waking up to the wonders of engagement. At a time when you can get free Instagram likes through social media service providers, it makes no sense to have people on your followers’ list who do not interact with your content.
Engagement is as important as numbers, if not more. If we look at it from a marketing perspective, it will make a lot more sense.
- Take, for example, you have 100 free Instagram followers. Now also imagine that you have a brand deal that is looking for growth and is willing to pay handsomely for it.
- Now, if you have an engaged and hooked viewership, you might be able to sell the branded goods to 80 of your followers. That means your conversion rate is 80%, which is an amazing accomplishment.
- Now let’s reverse the situation. Say you have 1000 followers, and a brand wants to partner with you. However, you end up selling to 200 customers.
On paper, 200 is more than 80, and the brand would also have made more revenue. However, in the second example, the conversion rate is only 20%. If that same Instagram influencer had an 80% conversion rate, they would have sold 800 units. The cost of reaching 1000 people individually is also more than that of 100 people. Instagram influencers with an engaged viewership give a much better return on investment for brands.
How to choose whom to unfollow
It is very easy to determine whom you should unfollow once you are convinced about the benefits of having an engaged subscriber base. There are many tools that let you see who has engaged with your posts and content. If you see someone who has not interacted with you in any capacity for a few months, it is time to bid them goodbye. Here you also benefit from the controversial follow/unfollow method.
The follow/unfollow method is not a great approach for getting more Instagram followers, but it comes as a side effect of trimming your following list.
When you streamline whom you interact with on Instagram, you also get better feedback on your content. Your live sessions would be more intimate, and the comment sections would look more cordial. There are many benefits to simply trimming your following list that Instagram influencers often ignore.
If you are struggling with growing your Instagram presence, you are perhaps doing a few things wrong. Given the intensely competitive nature of Instagram, it is no surprise that people without professional tools and services are staying behind.
